The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most legendary teams in NFL History. Now making their home at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pa., they are the oldest team in the AFC. The team entered the league in 1933 as the Pirates.
In 1940, in order to differentiate themselves from the city’s baseball franchise, they changed their name to the Steelers. That would be short-lived, however. Due to a lack of players caused by World War 2, the team was forced to merge with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1943, forming the Phil-Pitt Steagles. The following year they would merge with the Chicago Cardinals, forming a team known simply as Card-Pitt. In 1945 the team would once again become known as the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Times would remain hard for the team for a while, but with the hiring of Chuck Noll as head coach in 1969, and the AFL-NFL merger a year later; everything would change for the Steelers. For several years following the hiring of Noll, the team would contain the names of many future hall-of-Famers. Names such as “Mean” Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth, and many others.
The writing was on the wall. The Steelers were destined for greatness, and nothing would stand in their way. Beginning in 1971, the Steelers would not see a losing season until 1985. Two more losing seasons would follow in 1986 and 1988. The Steelers would end the season above .500 in the strike year of 1987. They would reach the playoffs again in 1989, followed by two more above .500 seasons before the retirement of Chuck Noll in 1991.
The team was still among the top teams in the league when Pittsburgh native Bill Cowher would take over, and make the Steelers an even more unstoppable force. The Steelers would make the playoffs in his first six years as head coach. 1995 in particular was hard for opposing teams, as no one seemed to have an answer for the “Blitzburgh” defense.
Cowher would resign in 2007 and Mike Tomlin was named head coach. He has since become the third consecutive coach to lead the team to the Super Bowl. Under Tomlin’s leadership, the team has remained dominant, with the Steel Curtain defense shutting down opposing offenses.
The Steelers boast an impressive 24 division championships, and 8 Conference championships and they are tied for 1st all-time with the New England Patriots with 6 Super Bowl victories. Although the team is based in Pittsburgh, Steeler Nation is widespread. There are few places in the United States where avid Steelers fans cannot be found.
