Calling Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina home, the Carolina Panthers entered the league in 1995. They are one of only two teams in the NFL that represent a region as opposed to a single state. The Panthers were added to the league as part of an NFL expansion along with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Panthers came out of the gate looking to make a statement. Led by head coach Dom Capers, they completed their season with a 7-9 record. That is the best record ever for a team in their first year of play. In only their second year they would win a division title. They would fall back to 7-9 in 1997 and even worse the following year. This led to Capers’ quick dismissal.
George Seifert was brought in as the new head coach and would lead the team to a respectable .500 season in 1999, but they would fall back once again to 7-9 in 2000. After winning their first game of the 2001 campaign, they would go winless the rest of the year. Putting them in a tie for the dubious record of most losses in a single season. Seifert was quickly shown the door.
This would usher in the John Fox era, and with it, would come success. In 2003 the Panthers would find themselves in the Super Bowl, in what many still proclaim the greatest game in Super Bowl history. The following season they would again go to the playoffs via the wild card and make it to the NFC championship game. 2008 saw another division championship. In 2009, quarterback Jake Delhomme had become prone to turnovers. The team was on its way to a losing season, and things looked to be getting worse when Delhomme suffered a season-ending injury. Matt Moore took over the position and surprised everybody by bringing the team to a respectable .500 by season’s end. A horrible record the following season prompted ownership to clean out the coaching staff.
Ron Rivera came in and drafted a young phenom by the name of Cam Newton. Being the first rookie to ever throw for over 4,000 yards and rush for over 500, the Panthers knew they had found a gem. 2013 would bring another division title, as would 2014. In 2015 they would go an amazing 15-1 and once again find themselves in the Super Bowl. In 2017 they would play well but lose the wild card game, just barely losing out on the playoffs.
Since that wild card loss, the franchise has had a rough 5 years with below .500 seasons. But one thing is for sure, this team never gives up and will always KEEP POUNDING! In their short history in the NFL the Panthers have been an overly impressive franchise with eight playoff appearances, six division championships, and two conference titles. In January the Panthers hired Frank Reich as head coach and drafted a fresh young quarterback by the name of Bryce Young. Many think he could be the face of the franchise for years to come and some have likened him to another Cam Newton. If that is true, then 2023 is going to be a wild ride.
