The Seattle Seahawks, who make their home at Lumen Field in Seattle, WA. began play in the NFL in 1976. They hired Minnesota Vikings assistant coach, Jack Patera as the team’s first head coach. After only one year of playing in the NFC, the team was moved to the AFC. Getting an expansion franchise going is tough for any coach, and Patera was no different. In 1983 he was replaced by Chuck Knox.

In Knox’s first year, the Seahawks found themselves making the playoffs through the wild card. The Blue Wave was back in the playoffs the following year. In 1988 they won the division championship. Also in ’88 the team was sold and missed the playoffs the next three seasons, after which, Knox resigned. Tom Flores was brought in, but the team continued to decline. Dennis Erickson was the next coach, but not the answer the Hawks needed, as their playoff drought continued. In 1999, they decided to hire Mike Holmgren.

Holmgren took the team directly to the division title. In 2002 the Seahawks were moved back to the NFC, making them the only team to change conferences twice. The team seemed to like the NFC as they went to the playoffs five consecutive seasons starting in 2003. They also had four consecutive division titles starting in ’04 and a conference championship in 2005. Holmgren left the team after the 2008 season and Jim Mora was promoted to the position. He would last only one year before Pete Carroll was brought in.

In 2010 the team was back in the playoffs. During the game, Seattle fans made history. Marshawn Lynch broke for a 67-yard run, breaking multiple tackles. The fan reaction was so loud it actually registered on the Richter scale. In 2011 the Seattle secondary became known as the Legion of Boom and would help carry the team forward for several years.

Starting in 2012 the Hawks would go on another string of playoff appearances lasting five years. Among those was the Super Bowl championship in 2013. They would also win the conference championship in 2014 and after missing the playoffs for one year were back for a division title in 2016. They would miss in 2017, then put together another three-year string of playoffs including topping the division again in 2020.
